Welcome to Mayfair

about Mayfair

Bordering leafy Hyde Park, Mayfair is an upscale district of elegant Georgian townhouses, exclusive hotels, and gourmet restaurants. Its world-famous retailers include bespoke tailors on Savile Row and designer fashions on Bond Street. Shoppers also head to high-end Burlington Arcade and Shepherd Market, a cluster of independent boutiques and traditional pubs. Cool modern art galleries line Cork Street. Mayfair has long been synonymous with exclusivity. The district was the playground of wealthy aristocrats in the 17th century, going on to become the home of luxury hotels and foreign embassies. Several long-standing private members’ clubs operate in Mayfair, most of which opened in the late 19th century, including creatives’ favourite The Arts Club and the uber-elite Annabel’s.

history

In 1686 a two-week May fair transferred from Haymarket to Great Brook Field, where Curzon Street and Shepherd Market now stand. In common with almost every London fair it became notorious for its ‘loose, idle and disorderly’ crowds – and the event was exiled to Bow in 1764. By this time, the neighbouring fields had been laid out with high-class residential streets and squares, notably Berkeley Square, Grosvenor Square and Hanover Square, while Bond Street had filled with fashionable shops.
